Ebonee is a dedicated apprentice pursuing her Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (MEM31922) with MAS Apprenticeships and Blue Dog Training at Flemings Welding Services based at Roma, Daring Downs. Ebonee is also a mentee in Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s Women in Trades Mentoring Program.

Her story highlights the importance of support networks in helping women thrive in male-dominated industries.

The program, which connects apprentices with experienced mentors, has been a transformative experience for Ebonee, providing her with valuable insights, support, and a sense of community.

“My confidence has grown as I’ve learnt new things to better myself in my trade, it’s really helped me progress in my apprenticeship,” Ebonee shared.

“Being partnered with a mentor in the same industry has been incredibly valuable. We share similar experiences and challenges, which makes our connection particularly meaningful.”

“Connecting with other women in different trades through the program has been eye-opening. It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone in facing certain challenges. There’s a network of professionals ready to support us.

“One day I want to own my own contracting company or engineering business of some sort and be able to support other women entering trades.

Ebonee’s journey through her apprenticeship, and continuation through the program highlights the importance of support networks in helping women thrive in traditionally male-dominated industries. She encourages other apprentices to join the industry, and the program, saying:

“Just go for it. Don’t worry about being torn down or feeling nervous. The program offers a supportive and empowering environment.”

As we approach International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 on March 8, the Women in Trades Mentoring programs, funded by the Queensland Government powerfully align with this year’s theme: “Accelerate Action.” The theme emphasises the urgency of making faster, more effective strides toward gender equality.

This IWD let’s follow Ebonee’s lead and commit to accelerating action in our own spheres of influence. Whether it’s mentoring, advocating for equality in the workplace, or supporting women-led initiatives, every action counts towards creating a more equitable world.
