Queensland’s small manufacturers are taking significant strides in enhancing their human resources practices, thanks to the Queensland Government’s $5,000 Workforce Connect Fund HR support grant.
Tina Pholi, Industry Workforce Advisor with Manufacturing Skills Queensland (MSQ), provides insights into how businesses are leveraging this opportunity to build stronger foundations for growth and sustainability.
“This grant is proving to be a game-changer for many small manufacturers,” says Tina. “It’s allowing them to invest in critical HR areas that they might have previously overlooked or couldn’t afford to address.”
According to Tina, businesses are using their grant in a range of ways to strengthen their human resources capability, including:
Developing Compliant Documentation
Many manufacturers are updating their essential HR documents to ensure compliance with current legislation.
“We’re seeing businesses create comprehensive staff handbooks, draft compliant employment contracts, and establish clear workplace policies,” Tina explains.
“This not only protects the business but also provides clarity for employees.”
Implementing Bespoke Recruitment Strategies
The grant is enabling businesses to establish robust recruitment processes. Tina notes, “Businesses are investing in crafting detailed position descriptions, developing targeted selection criteria, and preparing structured interview questions. This creates a sustainable framework for future hiring needs.”
Addressing New Legislation and Workplace Culture
“Adapting to new industrial relations legislation, such as the ‘right to disconnect’ policy, is a priority for many businesses,” Tina says.
“We’re also seeing a focus on team culture development, with some employers bringing in consultants to improve workplace dynamics – particularly where there has been significant change or growth.”
Tina said the grant was particularly valuable for small businesses, providing them with resources typically associated with larger corporations.
