TJ Picture Framing, a respected custom framing and art-finishing business based in Mackay, has developed a strong regional name over more than three decades for quality craftsmanship and the capability to “frame anything.”
Working with both retail and commercial customers, the business produces everything from unique, one-off gallery pieces to larger-volume print-and-frame orders.
With such a broad mix of work flowing through the studio, TJ Picture Framing faces the challenge of balancing custom craftsmanship with production efficiency—a perfect opportunity to streamline workflows and reduce bottlenecks that can impact both quality and turnaround times.
“We were aware that parts of our framing process weren’t as efficient as they could be,” the team shared.
“But it wasn’t always clear where the hold-ups or wasted effort was happening.
“We didn’t have the time to sit down and do an internal audit ourselves – we didn’t want to pause production,” they said.
To help address operational challenges, the business participated in Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s 5S and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Transformation Pilot, a program designed to support manufacturers in improving efficiency and productivity.
The program has delivered tangible results and positive impact for the business.
Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Kris McCue, said the program is designed to empower manufacturers to build stronger, more resilient operations for the future.
“This program is designed to complement and build on the knowledge manufacturing businesses gain through participation in the suite of available LEAN workshops and one-day courses. VSM provides manufacturers with the practical tools and tailored support they need to implement process improvements, uncover efficiencies, reduce waste and increase competitiveness.
“The participation of TJ Picture Framing in our 5S and Value Stream Mapping program highlights the systemic and long-term economic and other benefits small-to-medium manufacturers can gain from structured process improvements. Their commitment to enhancing efficiency while maintaining quality craftsmanship is exactly what this initiative aims to support.”
Creating clarity across a busy production process
Referred by the Mackay Queensland Manufacturing Hub, TJ Picture Framing seized the opportunity to participate in Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s (MSQ) 5S and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Transformation Pilot.
To support delivery of the program MSQ is working with Lean and VSM specialist Trent Miles, Director of Miles Industry Advisory to work alongside businesses.
“TJ Picture Framing wanted a better understanding of their complete workflow, from order intake right through to delivery,” Trent explained.
“The focus was on uncovering constraints, cutting down unnecessary movement, and increasing overall throughput.”
Operating as both a creative workshop and a small-scale manufacturer, the business manages a diverse set of production tasks including cutting, mounting, assembly, finishing, and specialist memorabilia framing using conservation-grade materials.
Operational barriers in flow and layout
While TJ Picture Framing had long-standing systems in place, the business recognised several challenges within its operations, such as:
Their aim was to establish a smoother, more predictable workflow that strengthened scheduling confidence and improved everyday efficiency.
A targeted Value Stream Mapping process
Over a focused three-to-four-week period, TJ Picture Framing participated in the full detailed Value Stream Map of its full framing operation.
Multiple site visits by Trent and his team during regular trading hours allowed workflow review under real production conditions. The process included step-by-step walkthroughs, staff observation, cycle-time measurement, and mapping of material and personnel movement.
All stages were documented—covering inventories, handovers, delays, rework, and waste—with draft maps prepared off-site, then reviewed and refined with business feedback.
“There was minimal disruption to our work activity during this mapping phase,” the TJ Picture Framing leadership team shared.
“That was another significant benefit of participating – we didn’t have to stop what we were doing – we didn’t have to miss client delivery dates or shut down the warehouse and miss opportunities to look after new clients.
“We were just able to carry on with our work, and a customised plan forward was made for us,” they said.
Lean opportunities and practical next steps
At the end of the engagement, TJ Picture Framing received a comprehensive current-state map supported by clear documentation of improvement priorities.
The VSM review highlighted several actionable opportunities, including:
The 5S framework – sort, set in order, shine, standardise, and sustain – established a practical foundation for ongoing organisation and efficiency gains.
“Through focused lean initiatives we have unlocked significant efficiency gains and streamlined our processes.”
“Introducing one-piece flow has been our single biggest improvement initiative—an effort we attacked with full commitment and have clearly proven its transformative impact on efficiency and throughput,” said Rod.
“In doing this type of work we regularly find that business owners and team members are just ‘too close’ to the work – and quite frankly – too busy – to be able to ‘zoom out’ and see how some slight adjustments here and there can really bring about a massive improvement in productivity, and with new systems clarity – a decrease in workplace stress,” Trent reflected.
