Small Scale, Big Impact: Celebrating the Manufacturers Powering Queensland’s Future

May is Queensland Small Business Month, which provides a timely opportunity to recognise the critical role that small and medium manufacturers play in driving the state’s economy.

With more than 18,000 businesses operating in Queensland’s manufacturing industry, the vast majority being small to medium enterprises, these businesses form a vital pillar of the state’s industrial landscape and regional development.

Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer, Rebecca Andrews, emphasised the far-reaching impact of these operations beyond metropolitan areas.

“This month we celebrate the talents of our small and medium sized manufacturers, many of whom are located outside of the Brisbane region,” said Rebecca.

“These businesses generate significant employment opportunities, foster innovation, and create sustainable economic growth in communities throughout Queensland.”

The geographic distribution of these manufacturers reflects Queensland’s unique industrial character, with Brisbane metro hosting 23% of businesses, Gold Coast 17%, and Sunshine Coast 10%. The remaining half of manufacturing businesses are located outside these three main population centres, highlighting Queensland’s distinctively balanced split between metro and regional manufacturing bases.

Small and medium manufacturers contribute billions to Queensland’s economy annually, with their products reaching domestic and international markets across diverse sectors including food processing, metal fabrication, machinery and equipment, and emerging advanced manufacturing.

“The resilience and adaptability demonstrated by Queensland’s manufacturing SMEs have been remarkable, particularly as they navigate global supply chain challenges and embrace new technologies,” said Rebecca.

“Their success is Queensland’s success, creating jobs, supporting regional communities, and establishing our state as a competitive manufacturing hub.”

To celebrate and support small businesses this month, Manufacturing Skills Queensland is hosting a series of free webinars with workforce specialists.
