Manufacturing Skills Queensland (MSQ) launches innovative 5S and VSM Transformation Pilot to help small and medium manufacturers optimise operations.

MSQ has announced the launch of its 5S and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) Transformation Pilot, a groundbreaking program designed to help Queensland’s small to medium-sized manufacturers take Lean methodologies theory from the classroom and into the workplace.

The program combines proven Lean methodologies with practical implementation strategies to address the specific challenges faced by local manufacturers. Delivered by Miles Industry Advisory, the pilot will initially support up to 15 Queensland businesses looking to transform their manufacturing operations.

Manufacturing Skills Queensland chief executive Rebecca Andrews said the pilot was in response to industry feedback about Lean methodology implementation.

“We’ve consistently heard from manufacturers across Queensland that whilst Lean workshops are an important first step in optimising their businesses, implementation of Lean methodologies is the crucial next step in the process.

“The hands-on approach of this pilot ensures manufacturers don’t just learn about Lean methodologies – they actively implement them in their operations with expert guidance,” said Rebecca.

The program offers participants a choice between two transformative pathways: Value Stream Mapping (VSM), which involves analysing current processes to identify inefficiencies and develop a customised action plan; or a 5S/Kaizen Event for businesses with established VSMs, focusing on workplace review and collaborative problem-solving.

Director of Miles Industry Advisory, Trent Miles said the focus was on practical results, not just theory.

“We focus on creating lasting improvements that stick around after we’re gone. Instead of just teaching Lean concepts, we work alongside your team to put them into action.

“What’s really powerful is how the program is designed to bring everyone together – from the shop floor to management – building a workplace where continuous improvement becomes part of everyday operations.”

More about the program

Participants will benefit from a structured improvement process that includes pre- and post-event evaluations to measure impact.

The pilot program is partially subsidised for Queensland manufacturers by Manufacturing Skills Queensland and the Queensland Government’s Manufacturing Hubs.

Manufacturing businesses interested in participating are encouraged to register their interest promptly, as places in the initial pilot are limited to 15 companies. Eligible businesses must be Queensland-based small to medium manufacturers committed to implementing process improvements.
