The groundbreaking Aeroskills Industry Readiness (AIR) Program has officially launched, offering a 5-week intensive training initiative designed to fast-track homegrown candidates into Queensland’s aviation maintenance industry. Developed and delivered by Sigma Aerospace College in partnership with McDermott Aviation, the program is funded by Manufacturing Skills Queensland (MSQ) as part of its Annual Training Plan for industry.
The inaugural cohort commenced training in April at McDermott’s Sunshine Coast facility, where participants will gain hands-on experience in trade assistant, aircraft maintenance engineer, and flight line support roles with this course focusing a focus on rotary operations.
Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s chief executive Rebecca Andrews said the program would help directly address critical skills shortage facing Queensland’s aerospace industry.
“By funding initiatives like this, we’re creating accessible pathways for Queenslanders to enter high-demand technical roles while simultaneously supporting industry growth.”
The AIR Program distinguishes itself through its innovative training methodology, combining aviation-focused psychometric screening with practical, hands-on experience in an operational environment. Participants benefit from cutting-edge training tools including virtual reality simulations and realistic job task scenarios.
“What sets this program apart is its immersive, industry-embedded approach,” said Rebecca.
“Rather than traditional classroom training, AIR participants learn in active maintenance facilities, using the actual tools and equipment they’ll encounter in their future careers.”
This industry-led initiative was identified as a priority project by the Industry Skills Jobs Advisor General Manufacturing Industry Reference Group.
MSQ’s Industry Reference Groups bring together key stakeholders from across manufacturing, including employers and industry associations to identify skills gaps and develop targeted programs like AIR that directly address workforce challenges.
MSQ’s funding ensures the program can be made available to students while maintaining high-quality delivery.
“Our investment in AIR represents our commitment to industry-led solutions that deliver job-ready candidates,” said Rebecca.
“We’re particularly impressed by the program’s framework, which ensures graduates are truly prepared for the demands of aviation maintenance roles.”
