Manufacturing Skills Queensland (MSQ) is proud to announce the opening of applications for Round 2 of the Women in Trades Mentoring Program (WITMP) for Manufacturing. This initiative aims to drive industry growth and innovation in Queensland’s manufacturing industry by empowering women through mentorship and support.
Building on the success of the inaugural round, which connected 30 mentees with 30 experienced mentors, the WITMP continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting women in manufacturing throughout Queensland. The first round saw 18 regional partnerships and 12 metropolitan collaborations, highlighting the program’s state-wide impact.
The program, delivered by MSQ and funded by the Queensland Government invites first- and second-year female apprentices to register as mentees, while women (and men) working in manufacturing—from third-year apprentices to senior leaders—are encouraged to apply as mentors.
Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer Rebecca Andrews emphasised the program’s initial success and its ongoing importance.
“Round 1 of the Women in Trades Mentoring Program demonstrated the power of connection, support, and mentorship in helping women thrive in manufacturing,” Ms Andrews said.
“We are excited to continue this momentum into Round 2. Our mentors are role models who provide insights, advice, and encouragement, while helping mentees build confidence and resilience. Together, we are shaping an inclusive industry where women can succeed and contribute meaningfully to the sector’s future.
The program has supported many women make connections and continue in their apprenticeship. Lauren Baillie, second-year cabinet making apprentice spoke highly of the program.
“The Women in Trades Mentoring Program was a lifeline for me when I needed it most. After facing challenges with my initial employer, I was on the verge of giving up on my apprenticeship. But my mentor, helped me see that one setback didn’t define my career. With his guidance, I found the confidence to restart my apprenticeship with a new employer. This program truly changed the course of my career.”
“What I appreciate most about the mentoring program is the ongoing support. Whenever I face a challenge or have a question, I know I can turn to my mentor for advice. It’s not just about technical skills; it’s about navigating the industry as a woman and having the support of someone who is succeeding which gives me the confidence to push forward. Thanks to this program, I’m not just continuing my apprenticeship – I’m thriving in it,” said Ms Baille.
