Thirty-two meat processing professionals across Queensland have commenced an industry-leading training program designed to address a critical shortage of qualified supervisors and managers in the state’s meat processing sector.
The program, funded by Manufacturing Skills Queensland and delivered by FS Alliance, represents a strategic response to workforce challenges threatening the productivity of Queensland’s meat processing industry, which exported $9.7 billion in value to overseas destinations in 2024/25.
Queensland’s meat processing sector faces an aging workforce and a shortage of workers with the specialised leadership skills needed to manage modern, highly regulated processing facilities. Without qualified supervisors, facilities struggle to maintain food safety standards, meet export requirements, and optimise production efficiency.
MSQ chief executive Kris McCue said the program addresses a critical gap in the industry’s leadership pipeline.
“We’re seeing experienced workers on the floor, but not enough qualified supervisors who can lead teams, manage compliance, and drive operational excellence.
“This training creates a clear pathway for capable workers to step up into leadership roles, which is essential for the long-term viability of meat processing facilities across regional Queensland.”
The qualification develops critical competencies that directly impact workplace safety, product quality, and operational performance. Participants learn to oversee food safety programs, monitor workplace health and safety processes, lead teams effectively, and drive continuous improvement—skills that translate directly to reduced workplace incidents, improved product quality, and increased productivity.
For the 32 participants, this represents a career-defining opportunity to transition from operational roles to management positions with higher earning potential and greater job security.

Graduates will be qualified for roles including Operations Manager, Production Manager, Technical Supervisor, Section Manager, and Quality Assurance Manager—positions that command higher salaries and offer greater career progression.
