Manufacturing Skills Queensland Launches $5.1 Million Annual Training Plan For Industry

Manufacturing Skills Queensland (MSQ) has launched its 2026-27 Annual Training Plan, unveiling a $5.1 million investment designed to address critical workforce challenges and equip Queensland’s manufacturing sector with the skills needed to thrive in an evolving industry landscape. 

The plan was officially launched at a breakfast event in Maryborough, followed by a Showcase Day at MSQ’s Centre of Excellence, which brought together manufacturers, educators, students, job seekers, and community members. 

MSQ Chief Executive Officer Kris McCue said the plan responds directly to extensive consultation with manufacturers and industry stakeholders across Queensland. 

“We’ve listened to what industry has told us about their workforce challenges, and this Annual Training Plan is our strategic response. 

“With this Annual Training Plan, we’re not just addressing today’s skills gaps—we’re preparing Queensland’s manufacturing workforce for the future, including support for advancement of Industry 5.0 and artificial intelligence,” said Kris.  

The 2026-27 Annual Training Plan is built around four key pillars: 

• Attraction and Engagement – Connecting schools, industry, and communities through immersive initiatives that promote manufacturing careers and build a dynamic workforce pipeline. 
• Transformation and Leadership – Preparing manufacturers to embrace Industry 4.0 and the rapidly approaching Industry 5.0, driven by breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. 
• Training and Skills – Delivering specialised, flexible training from welding certification and high-risk licensing to mental health and resilience courses, building a capable and sustainable workforce. 
• Diversity in Manufacturing – Building inclusive pathways and tailored programs to support diverse cohorts across the industry, recognising that diversity drives innovation. 

“Labour supply remains one of the most pressing challenges facing our sector,” Mr McCue said. 

“This plan is about creating real opportunities, strengthening our local industry, and ensuring Queensland manufacturers remain competitive and future ready.”
