Sunshine Coast’s Aeroskills Industry Readiness (AIR) Program has officially launched its third round, preparing the next generation of skilled workers for careers in aerospace manufacturing and maintenance.
Delivered by Sigma Aerospace College and funded by Manufacturing Skills Queensland alongside the Sunshine Coast Manufacturing Hub, this intensive 5-week program equips post-school candidates with the essential skills and industry exposure needed to thrive in the aviation sector.
Sigma Aerospace College Training Manager Nick Booth said the program was designed to developed candidates for industry comfortable on the flight line and in the hangar.
“The AIR Program gives participants real-world experience in a controlled, hangar-like environment. We focus on safety, tool control, workplace health, and practical aircraft maintenance skills. Graduates leave ready to contribute immediately, reducing onboarding time and recruitment risk for employers.”
“We deliver training face-to-face and integrated with local partners, so training aligns to actual tasking and company procedures, not generic work experience”, said Nick.
Graduates receive thorough training in ground handling, flight-line safety, aircraft washing and inspections, refuelling procedures, and oxygen/nitrogen handling. They master the essential skills required to hit the ground running from day one.
Manufacturing Skills Queensland’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Kris McCue said the program addressed critical skills shortages in Queensland’s aerospace manufacturing sector.
“The Aeroskills Industry Readiness Program pre-screens and trains candidates to ensure they are well-suited for aircraft manufacturing and maintenance.
“Our investment in the AIR Program reflects our commitment to building a sustainable aerospace workforce. By supporting targeted training and industry partnerships, we are helping bridge the gap between education and employment.
“By equipping candidates with essential skills and industry insights, the program streamlines the recruitment process and helps build a strong foundation for successful careers in aviation manufacturing,” said Kris.
Mel Ireland, Manager of the Sunshine Coast Manufacturing Hub, said the program was helping strengthen regional manufacturing capabilities within the aviation sector.
“Sunshine Coast’s aviation manufacturing and maintenance sector is a key driver of regional economic growth and innovation.
“Strengthening this industry not only creates skilled jobs but also attracts investment and builds a resilient local economy that benefits the entire community,” said Mel.
Employers like McDermott Aviation, are a key industry partner, play an integral role in the program’s success.
McDermott Aviation’s Priority Projects Coordinator, Adam Myers said the program had practical benefits for industry and candidates.
“We value the AIR Program because it prepares candidates with real-world skills and safety awareness before they join our teams. It reduces recruitment risks and accelerates onboarding, which is crucial in our fast-paced environment,” Adam said.
Participants benefit from a blend of classroom learning and practical hangar experience, covering safety protocols, maintenance fundamentals, and operational procedures.
Program participant Athony Carlos said the chance to learn in a real aviation environment was one of the reasons they signed up to the program.
“I’m excited to be part of the AIR Program and look forward to learning about aircraft maintenance, safety procedures, and hands-on skills. This program is a great way to get started in aviation and build a strong foundation for a future career,” Anthony said.
